Well, we’re off and running for another year. Everyone’s having a great time as usual. Sure miss those who didn’t make it this year & hope you all make back next year.

Men’s Barbershop is growing with new singers again this year. Hopefully it will continue to grow and get both bigger and stringer.

Early Camp Arrivals from Winnepeg

Posted by John Elving on June 26, 2010

This came in from Sue Thomas. Please let her know by answering this post.

———————————-

There are some of us Winnipeg folk who will be up at the camp on the Friday before and were wondering if anyone else was going to be there as well to join us at Kelvin’s.

Also, with the abundance of skeeters this year, we want to know if anyone can bring a fogger to camp so we can fog around the camp fire.

Calling All Singers

Posted by John Elving on May 30, 2010

The end of July is coming soon. It time for all singers, both male & female, to make their plans to come sing great barbershop music together during the adult camp. All you past attendees who know of any singers who love a good time singing a cappella, 4-part music to have them make plans to attend. See you all soon.

Time Is Flying

Posted by John Elving on February 17, 2010

That’s right, time is flying and it’s that time of year to be thinking about this year’s camp. It’s time to start recruiting a new class of “freshmen” not only to take the place of those who won’t be with us, but to grow the camp. I’m especially looking for new Barbershop Chorus singers, as I’m sure Naomi is with the women.

Let’s start filling ourselves with the joy of music now so we can spread it around in July.

Hope to see you all then.

Band Jam Day

Posted by John Elving on October 29, 2009

This from Valerie Pearson via Sue Thomas:

Some of our “band camp buddies” from other locations such as Dauphin, N. Dakota, and Minnesota, wanted to have a weekend get-together in Winnipeg. On Nov. 14 we have the use of ANAF 283 on Portage Ave. The plan is to have reading sessions throughout the day with various directors among our numbers taking turns. For those who went to camp and hated it to end, there will be an opportunity to visit on Friday and or Saturday evenings and during breaks in the day, with the out-of-towners. For those who haven’t been to camp, it’s a day to play and hear enough stories that you won’t want to miss in the future!

The whole idea is just to have fun playing. Not all are as lucky as those of us who live in Winnipeg with so many opportunities to do this.

In order to have an idea how much music to prepare and which parts, please let me know your intentions. (vpearson12@shaw.ca)  We’ll be playing approximately between 10 am and 4 pm with beverage breaks.

Are We Ready For a Logo?

Posted by John Elving on September 4, 2009

Doug Nelson of the infamous Kildeer Kampers wrote and requested that we think about a logo contest for the IMC Eh? group. It would become the “official” logo of the group.

This would then be used for caps/hats, T-shirts, etc. and sold to raise money for a very worthy cause. Oh, the cause? To help with the CPR weekend and getting the campground back up to snuff physically.

To go along with this, he is suggesting that we may want to try other fund-raisers and getting a group of teams together to help during the CPR weekend. Wouldn’t it be great to have the camp really spiffed up for next year? Let’s discuss the possibilities here. You can also email me & I’ll send it along to Doug.

I can tell you now it would be easy to get the merchandise on CafePress and have a link here for our products. Give it some thought, and send in your logo ideas. I can accept them in any format you make them in. (No stick figures in crayon, please.)

OK , sorry it took me so long to send this. Here's my opinion on the movie (in bullet points):

. It's not a hobby, it's a calling. - Great line from the beginning of the movie that I think says a lot about the devotion
of serious barbershoppers.

. I'm disappointed that the movie was not advertised better - in a city like Houston with all of the universities and
colleges here, did the Society market the movie to the colleges? Did they let them know that it was coming or do some sort of
advertising. I shouldn't have been the only person in the movie theater.

. I think that if you are not familiar with barbershop, the movie is a good way to get a glimpse of what its really like -
its not just a bunch of older men sitting around singing because they have nothing better to do.

. I think that the 4 quartets they focused on (Reveille, OC Times, Vocal Spectrum, and Max Q) were a good sampling of
quartets. Although, the bass from Max Q did not necessarily come off as being a great guy.

. The movie focused primarily on Max Q and OC Times and their pursuit of the title. I think it was a good representation -
especially the part about Max Q's "star factor" and the amount of winning the individuals had done in other quartets and how people
just assumed they were going to blow the competition away right off the bat. And they didn't.

. OC Times (in my humble opinion) and Reveille portrayed the community aspect of barbershop - they aren't just a quartet,
they are friends and are there for each other. The death of the tenor in Reveille really illustrated this.

. Overall, it was a good movie that I think demonstrates the importance of barbershop to a lot of people - not just those
who sing, but also those who support the singers, those who coach, etc. International (and district) competitions are intense and
taken seriously by those who compete. I think that the movie demonstrates that this is a vital community with a strong and healthy
tradition.
